Is Sikhism an off shoot of Islam? or Hinduism? Or both? How does one copy and paste from two opposite ends of the spectrum and make a new religion, how is this possible?

Wikepedia was created for questions precisely like this.

That is exactly why there are so many religions on this planet. All are offshoots and mixtures of other belief systems. I would suggest reading a comparative religion text. Also I would start with reading Greek philosophy and research the religions of the 'Axial Age' in which one can obtain an understanding as to the origin of many of the belief systems that are major religions today.

Interesting question.

Can't agree with ThisLife as about where to find info though... I find there to be nothing reliable about wikipedia.

I think that was their point

Whose point ? Wikepedia's ? You feel they were created to be unreliable ?

My point was that a straight forward, factual / historical question like this - "Is Sikhism an off shoot of Islam? or Hinduism? Or both?" ,...... is what Google or Wikepedia excels in. Details and minutiae.

Where this forum has a purpose is in providing a venue for people who have 'experimented', (as it were), with these dried husks of religions and philosophies, and are willing to share their experiences as to how reliable, effective, socially comforting,... whatever,... they were when the experimentor tried to bring them into their own life. In short, I think that forums like this work best when all of us members help each other by treating this meeting place as one would if we were writing a review, or rating, for Spiritual Trip Advisor.

Google, on the other hand, is the place to go for background minutiae.

Thanks for that ... I was unfamiliar with that term - now I have something else interesting to read about :) .

It seems many religious ideas passed from Zoroastrianism into the stream of 'Abrahamic religions' (and going further back an original postulated P.I.E. religion/s may also be the source of some vedic concepts. Also of interest is the idea of 'Progressive Revelation' and 'Prisca Theologia'.

The attempt at blending religions that are in conflict is IMO a good idea ... except it needs to be done via the impetus of a 'prophet' or the tribal Shaman ... someone with an authority to stimulate the 'religious instinct' in a new direction (as other impetus does not seem to have sufficient 'staying power' (like socialism, communism, economic rationalism, etc) and often lacks an 'ethical/spiritual' principle.

I think I read some where that an American Indian shaman/leader (sorry, cant remember the name ) was able to find a new way for his people by blending their traditional beliefs with the new culture they are in and present that as a message from the spirit relating to what they need to do now. Some indigenous teachers are attempting the same here. I hope it works.

Its better than fighting all the time .

Sikhism is a monotheistic religion theologically distinct from Islam and Hinduism, but shares cultural elements with both.
