Hermetic and Occult - Change?

Recommended Posts

How about just calling it "Occult Discussion". :)

My 2 cents, Peace

OK I changed my mind, I definitely like this idea :).

I also think religions would fit better under the "other" category than the western traditions one; only a few religions are western, and only bits of them are esoteric ;).

When the idea that became the 'Hermetic/Occult' section was proposed I never liked calling it 'Hermetic', which is only part of a larger set of interrelated traditions. At the time I suggested Western Esoteric Traditions, or even simply Western Traditions. This can be subitled Hermetism, Qabalah, Rosicrucianism, Ceremonial Magic, Occultism and more and tagged in various ways, but if you look at the content it is far broader than just Hermetism. At this time none of these topics have been developed enough to merit further subdivisions. It should be born in mind that the Abrahamic religious traditions have been an important part of these, as well as the traditional Pagan religious systems. Even Theosophy, while it certainly has drawn on Indian traditions, is rather more of a repackaging of these by and for Westerners and has been extremely influential in the development modern Western 'occultism'.

So are you all saying ?

- Western Esoteric Traditions {formerly Hermetic and Occult}: mysticism, esoteric, magic, and religion, etc

- Other Traditions: Covers western philosophy, logic and reason, etc

This can be subitled Hermetism, Qabalah, Rosicrucianism, Ceremonial Magic, Occultism and more: These are some of the possible subtitles. An example would be:

- Western Esoteric Traditions {formerly Hermetic and Occult}: Western Mysticism and Magic, such as Hermetism, Qabalah, Rosicrucianism, Ceremonial Magic, Occultism and more

- Other Traditions: Covers western philosophy, logic and reason, etc: I would simply drop this. The reason being, that as I have said Western Esoteric Traditions have reason at their core, whether people realize that or not and almost every Western Philosophy, except the late Roman Epicurianism of Lucretius, which became the basis of modern materialism, can at least be brought in, insofar as it can be, if it contributed to these esoteric traditions, or or provides context for understanding them, it can be brought in, otherwise it would be excluded and what other traditions are we then concerned with? I also don't think it would get much posted in it, or much attention in general. It would amount to wasted cyber-space and possible increase clutter.

Another reason to drop "Other Traditions" is that it can simply still get posted in the main general entry section... and those areas which are an overlap leaves the poster to decide if they want it in a sub-forum...

This looks like:

Taoist Discussion (covers Chinese philosophies, text, etc)

Non-Taoist Discussions

Postable entry section can cover: Jainism, Sikhism, Carvaka and Sufism, Shinto, Parsism and Zoroastrianism, Shamanism, any philosophy, etc

- Buddha Darsanas & Tantra (covers Tibetan, Theravada and Mahayana, and Zen)

- Hindu Darsanas & Tantra (that will cover the 6 schools of hindu thought - Vedanta, Mimamsa, Nyaya, Samkhya, Vaisheshika,Yoga as well as the Tantrik Schools - Kashmir Shaivism, etc).

- Western Esoteric Traditions (or Esoteric Traditions or Occult Traditions): Western Mysticism and Magic, such as Hermetism, Qabalah, Rosicrucianism, Ceremonial Magic, Occultism and more

Before we get too comfortable with this.... I finally visualized Simple_Jack's idea of having the "Three as One" somehow together...

My personal feeling is that Taoist Discussion is burdened with Textual sub-forums when it should really have sub-forums of cultivation, practices, internal arts, etc.

If the Textual stuff was moved, it should logically just go with this new area of textual, philosophy, etc... as:

Taoist Discussion (All Textual stuff moved out; Daoist Text and Confucian Philosophy)

- Opens up for subs of practice, internal arts, cultivation, etc.

Textual Discussion (or Philosophical Traditions... or something better)

Postable entry section can cover: Jainism, Sikhism, Carvaka and Sufism, Shinto, Parsism and Zoroastrianism, Shamanism, any philosophy, etc

- Taoist Textual (All the current ones are move here, along with Confucian philosophy)

I am not sure I like this as it needs more thought... but finally thought I had a glimpse of SJ's idea....

Postable entry section can cover: Jainism, Sikhism, Carvaka and Sufism, Shinto, Parsism and Zoroastrianism, Shamanism, any philosophy, etc

The entry section is the catch-all...

Nope.

Taoist hats are ' Silly' hats.

( A hat with a hole in the top defeats the object of 'hat')

Buddhist hats are 'Funny' hats.

( Mirth inducing but no hole in the top hence NOT silly , just risible)".

" The Cauldron" was the title of a short lived magazine aimed at the Wicca sorority ( and fraternity but to a lesser extent).

Quote from the editor's page , final edition....

" I can't understand it. We published the first edition at the correct phase of the moon, worked the right rituals for every success.

Every edition had a sigil for sales on the front page.

Yet still hardly anyone bought The Cauldron, so this is the final issue."

Three months it lasted.

I tend to be in the 'Aint broken, don't fix it' camp. Though sometimes you need to grow organically or things stagnate.

One aspect to beware of is jargon; words not known by most of the population and make newbies assume we are too exotic. Frankly I'm not that familiar with the word Darsanas, and others might be put off by it.

my 3 bits.
